Professor Robert Thomas is a full time NHS Consultant Oncologist at Addenbrooke's and Bedford and Hospitals. He is Director of Oncology reserach at Bedford. He is also a Clinical Teacher at Cambridge University, a Professor of Sports and Nutritional science at the University of Bedfordshire author of the book "How to Live" and head of oncology at The Royal Hospital for integrative Medicine, Great Ormond St.

He manages patients with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormones and the newer biological treatments but incorporates nutritional and lifestyle strategies into routine management to enhance outcomes and reduce side effects.

Research Experience: He has been chief and principle investigator of numerous radiotherapy, Herceptin and hormonal trials run by the National Cancer Research Network, Universities or the pharmaceutical industry. He is also head of a Lifestyle and Cancer Research Unit which designs and conducts university approved scientific national studies which evaluate the impact of exercise, diet, gut health and natural therapies on cancer, long covid other chronic diseases and exercise performance. He is currently chief investigator of the national covid vaccine nutritional intervention study and the YourPhyto study evaluating phytochemical and probiotic strategies to improve gut health and their impact on prostate cancer progression. He was awarded The UK's "Hospital Doctor of the Year", The British Oncology Association “Oncologist of the Year” and The Royal College of Radiologist Research Medal. The NHS research Prize and Honorary Fellow of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine.

Dr William Bird MBE is passionate about getting people active.

As a family GP in the 1990s, he pioneered the concept of social prescribing by setting up the first Health Walk scheme, closely followed by the first Green Gym. He quickly found that companionship and contact with nature were major driving forces in keeping people active. William is now a global authority on health and activity, and is an advisor to the World Health Organisation, the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities and Sport England. Recognising William’s contribution to health and physical activity, William was awarded an MBE in the 2010 Queen’s New Year Honours and as an Honorary Professor at the University of Exeter in 2021. In 2022 Dr Bird was officially appointed as the Chair of Active Essex, the Active Partnership for Essex.

In 2010, he set up Intelligent Health, an organisation that has a mission to build healthier, active and more connected communities. Intelligent Health’s flagship programme is Beat the Street, which sees communities transformed into a giant game where players achieve points and prizes by walking, cycling, and scooting around their local area. Beat the Street has had over 1.8 million participants worldwide to date and is backed by research which demonstrates sustained physical activity behaviour change.

Professor Tipton has worked at the University of Surrey and University of Portsmouth. In addition, he was based at the Institute of Naval Medicine (INM) from 1983 to 2004 and was Consultant Head of the Environmental Medicine Division of the INM from 1996. He has published over 800 scientific papers, reports, chapters, abstracts and books in his research areas of cold water immersion, thermoregulation, environmental and occupational physiology.

Professor Tipton is an honorary life member of Surf Lifesaving GB and was a Trustee/Director for ten years, he is a member of the Council of the RNLI as well as a Consultant to the Medical Director of the RNLI. He has been a consultant in survival and thermal medicine to the Royal Air Force, UKSport and the English Institute of Sport (EIS). He chaired UKSport’s Research Advisory Group and sat on the EIS Scientific and Ethics Advisory Group. Prof Tipton as edited several scientific journals including The Physiological Society’s “Experimental Physiology”.

Prof Tipton is a visiting Professor at King’s College, London, and an Adjunct Professor at Waterford Institute of Technology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and The Physiological Society. He was awarded his MBE for services to physiological research in extreme environments; the Ireland Medal for saving lives from drowning worldwide; and the H&L Swiftwater rescue lifetime achievement award from the USA.

My name is Sheena Fraser, I'm a GP partner and trainer with a special interest in dermatology, minor surgery, Lifestyle medicine and microbiome science. I live and work in Glasgow but completed my medical training in Sheffield.

My interest in Lifestyle medicine and microbiome science started in 2018 when I attended my first BSLM conference. I have since completed my diploma in lifestyle medicine, lectured in sleep, taken part in a sleep and microbiome webinars for BSLM in 2021 and presented at the 2021 and 2022 annual BSLM conferences. I write regular blogs for BSLM on lifestyle related topics. I am also involved in medical training of GP trainees and regularly lecture in Dermatology, lifestyle medicine and microbiome science. I am passionate about preventative medicine and applying lifestyle medicine with my patients so started a patient walking group once a week in April 2021.

After 4 years of writing and researching with my fellow microbiome obsessed friend, Siobhan Maccormack, "Gut Microbiome for clinicians" (an online course on the gut microbiome) was published Sept 2022 in collaboration with BSLM. Its aim is educating more health professionals in this fascinating novel field. After realising we were not ready to part ways and had only really touched the surface of microbiome science, Siobhan and I launched the "Microbiome Medics Podcast". My own clinical practice has changed greatly with my new found microbiome knowledge and I thrive on the excitement of this new field of medicine.

I'm a busy mum to 3 children and am passionate about cooking food from scratch using local produce (often foraged). I am a keen supporter of The Soil Association and value our connection to nature and the need to protect the integrity of our soil and natural ecosystems.

Dr Wolfgang Marx is a Senior Research Fellow and an NHMRC Emerging Leader at the Food & Mood Centre, Deakin University.

Wolfgang is president of the International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research as well as an honorary research fellow at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, La Trobe University, and Bond University.

Wolfgang’s current research program covers a broad range of projects involving the development of international guidelines for lifestyle interventions, the investigation novel dietary interventions, and exploring the potential adverse effects of ultra-processed foods on our mental health.

Rachel is the Director of Public Health for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, working to improve and protect the health of the population. She provides public health leadership across the 2 councils and the Integrated Care System. This has included high profile leadership of the public health response during the Covid19 pandemic. She has worked with Cornwall Council, the Voluntary and Community Sector and the NHS in Cornwall since 2015. Previously she has held a range of senior public health roles in Plymouth City Council, Gloucestershire PCT, and as a Consultant in Public Health with Public Health England’s South West regional team.

Rachel has a passion for working alongside communities to improve the health of vulnerable groups and previously worked in the voluntary sector for Shelter (Homeless Charity), Sure Start, and ESF employability programmes. She also has a strong academic background and research experience with Oxford University (SDRG), London School of Economics (PSSRU), Exeter University Medical School and currently leads the five-year NIHR Health Determinants Research Collaborative for Cornwall. Rachel is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health.

Paul is an award-winning strategic leader who has significant experience in tackling health inequalities across the communities in Cornwall who face the greatest barriers and worst outcomes.

He has worked in primary care and led the first UK Dental Company to achieve B Corp Status, an independent verification of social and environmental impact, balancing profit and purpose.

Paul is the CEO of Active Cornwall, the organisation bringing a change in the long-term health of populations by working with key partners to remove the barriers to movement and physical activity.

Emma Seward-Adams, Social Prescribing and Health Coach Lead, Watergate PCN

Emma has a background in sports science, joining the NHS after 20+ years in education. Her interests lie in using diet and lifestyle interventions to support people with long-term conditions to improve their health and wellbeing.

Izzy has an AfN accredited Degree in Nutrition. She works with patients to help educate, support and change behaviours around food, physical activity and their wellbeing.

Emma leads a team of people who are passionate about supporting the VCSE sector in Cornwall and the IoS. With over 20 years of experience in the VCSE, NHS and local government, Emma advocates for the sector to be treated as an equal partner in the design, delivery and funding of services.

Emma is committed to ensuring that statutory partners listen to and value our experience in working with the most vulnerable people and communities.

Emma loves yoga, sea dips, walking her three dogs and spending time in nature and volunteers in her local patient participation group.
